The Process of Infant Adoption

As mention before infant adoption is a big process. Infant adoption will be complicated, time consuming and a frustrating event, but don't give up your dream. The process of infant adoption has become a little but easier with all of the many resources that are available today. Especially on the internet there is a lot of sites to help the adoptive parents to learn about infant adoption.

The first step of infant adoption is asking yourself questions like:
  • Is infant adoption the right thing for us?

  • Would you prefer a boy or a girl?

  • Have you thought about the difficulties that may come when raising a child?

  • Have you consider your lifestyle now and how an infant adoption would fit into that?

  • What are the essential factors for us wanting to proceed with an infant adoption?
It's also important to discuss en infant adoption with your family and friends and once you are absolutely sure that you want to proceed move on to the next step.

Second step of infant adoption is to find out what your options are. It's a good idea to read information about adoption in general at first and then narrow your reading as you become more sure of what you want. It's important that you find out what the different ways of infant adoption are and what types of children are available to adopt. Once you are sure of what you want from the infant adoption it's time to contact an adoption agency.

The first thing that will happen after you have contacted an adoption agency will be a home study for the infant adoption. Basically the home study is all about gathering information regarding you, the adoptive couple. However this not only includes interviews and personality tests, but also education and preparation for the infant adoption. The length of this process varies a lot depending on the particular agency you have chosen, but most likely it will take between 2 and 10 months.

It's now time for waiting. Often you have to wait some time before the right child is available. When you finally get a child that fits into your family and your lifestyle it will take some further time before the child is actually adopted. This time varies and mostly depends on what type of infant adoption we are talking about.

The final step in an infant adoption is the actual adopting of the child. Then it's time for you to be parents for the adopted child. During the first year you will need some support and it will take the child some time to become comfortable in the new home after the infant adoption. But you will slowly become a real family even if it's an infant adoption.
